Women - Methsevana Womens’ Detention Centre |
- Counseling – those to be released and those who are still serving sentence, need assistance to prepare them to return to the society with dignity.
- A halfway home needs to be set up for those who are ready to leave the Centre – Many are languishing in the Centre since no ‘guardian’ has come forward to get them released. Those who have no one could benefit with a place to stay for a few months, until such time they can fend/provide for themselves.
- Water Tanks - there is a need for a few cement water tanks to be constructed in the premises - currently they use taps which are frequently damaged.
- Recreational/motivational activities – the inmates spend their day according to a time schedule. We are working with the officials to assist them to break the monotony of the schedule and provide them some activities to light up their lives. We have begun with a monthly film day and hope to bring in motivational lady speakers to share their experiences.
- Sewing Project – We have managed to obtain a large quantity of cloth from JAAF, which we hope can be stitched into clothes to be used for the inmates and any excess provided for the Mullariyawa female inmates. We are looking for a volunteer competent in sewing, to visit the Methsevana Centre and teach/supervise the inmates to produce such garments. Additionally, we are also trying to source blocks which could be utilized for sewing the garments.

Children |

Monthly medical clinics to be facilitated – sponsorship for such clinics is required.
Children of Family Disputes The children who are brought to the Women’s & Children’s Bureau require refreshments. We currently have a commitment from Nestle Lanka (for a year) and a short term commitment from Perera & Sons and Chariot. Further sponsorships are required to continue this initiative.
