Strengthening the local capacities for Peace building
Increased awareness/knowledge of middle level leaders on peace and the multiple impacts of conflict in a way that improve the lives of people through different levels of intervention and mobilized grassroots pressure for negotiated settlement for sustainable ‘positive peace'

Major components

The main tasks carried out under the project are as follows:

1) Distance Learning Certificate Course in Peace building

 

Objectives :

To provide an opportunity to the district C B O leaders /youth theoretical knowledge on Peace building and Conflict resolution in local language in there locations

To widening the reach by targeting people directly involved with the Peace building and conflict resolution activities at the community level, who otherwise would not have access or the ability to pursue such training

Outcomes :

100 recourse personnel who are competent in peace building activities with theoretical knowledge in the grass-roots

2) Mobilizing Grassroots Initiatives: (Advisory Services and Networking)
2.1 Regional Peace Committees
 

Objective

To create/strengthen community for mutually and collectively examine and address challenges and needs in carrying out peace related activities at a community level.

To empower five regional organizations to continue anchoring similar work in the future.

Outcome

Local agencies are capacitated and empowered to carryout peace interventions as and when necessary.

Strong partner organization network which coordinate and support the community in Peace building

2.2 Peace Interventions
 

Objective

To identify and address opportunities for ‘peace interventions' in their communities.

Outcome

•  15 peace building initiatives were implemented in the various parts of the island

•  Five regional CBO's involve in peace intervention activities with active individuals and small agencies from the region.

2.3 Updating of Peace building Toolkit
 

Objective

To build the capacity and effectiveness of Peace building practitioners in Sri Lanka This initiative seeks to gather and compile grassroots level experience of Peace building in the form of a toolkit of resource material and case studies

Outcome

•  Resource materials for trainers and trainees

2.4 Directory Update
 

Objectives
•  Disseminate information on the organizational profile, their activities, geographical location, area(s) of operation and their profiles.
•  Provide an opportunity for local NGOs to highlight their needs to the international community in order to organize their work in an effective manner in the future and also obtain help from donor organizations

Outcome
•  An online directory of all organizations which involved in Peace building available on CD in all three languages. It is also posted on the web. The Web Link is

Future activities

  • To continue the Distant Learning certificate course for the next two years
  • To develop a special module for the training
  • To formation of a network of organizations from the regions to work in partnership in the future. Assistance in infrastructure, logistical and advisory services is encouraged between these organizations at the inter-regional partner meetings. This will enable strong network and coordination among the agencies to work in any part of the country.
  • To link the certificate course with the other training courses for further improve the content validity
  • Further support to capacitate the partner organizations in peace building activities
