Special Projects

These projects are highlighted due to their novel and long term possibilities. If successful it is hoped to replicate these projects in different districts so as to build up a network of similar practices that in turn will see a change in the ways of farming and waste management in the country.

Bio-farming (using traditional seed varieties)

Hambantota District

This innovative and exciting initiative is being carried out by the CHA Hambantota team together with relevant Agricultural Institute resource persons as well as a local agricultural-based organization ( ). The Rohana farmers' foundation is the involved farming group. Twenty five (25) hectares of land in the Amabalantota area which had been abandoned for close to 20 years due to high salinity and ocean flooding is now once again being cultivated using bio farming practices and saline tolerant traditional strains of paddy

Recycled paper project

EP is currently supporting a small scale recycled paper venture to increase its capacity by providing necessary equipment. The water weed –water hyacinth – which often clogs up canals, is being harvested for the creation of paper, cards, boxes, bags etc. This provides a double benefit by serving to clear water ways and using an invasive plant species as a productive cost effective primary base product.

We are also attempting to find markets for their recycled products – items are currently displayed at the CHA Colombo office.

Recycling of Waste

The composting and recycling of paper is being initiated in all CHA offices. The Colombo municipal council (CMC) has a variety of eco-drop off points for separated waste. In collaboration with CMC, EP aims to ensure awareness of these points as well the practice of separating household waste, in order to reduce the waste collected by the CMC.

Centre compost points – all operational Centres will have a display of the various urban and rural composting methods; a focus will be on the use of traditional composting methods as these are more cost effective and sustainable in the Sri Lankan context.
