The SGS, emphasizes the provision of support for small home based locally oriented projects carried out by individuals and or small groups that may otherwise not have had access to such support; the programme has achieved its initial purpose by reaching out to many people and empowering them to enhance and improve their surrounding environment.

Most projects supported involve ecologically based home gardening and extension planting and environmentally sustainable cottage industries. Each of the district SGS projects are currently at varying stages of progress; see individual district reports for more details.
