Due to ongoing natural hazard damage, and especially after the 2004 tsunami, the need to re-vegetate damaged coastal and riverine areas as well as other slope prone zones is vital. In addition, new areas that are/have underdone unplanned development (high density housing schemes, cleared and built slopes, large monocultures) are now in need of restoration via reforestation. It is this practice of replanting that will help stabilize and regenerate areas by increasing forest cover

Hambantota
Home gardening and nursery establishment A nursery that will grow plants from seedlings is currently being established within the large new re settlement village of hambantota (Mayurapura). The idea is to have both economically productive plant species as well as ecologically relevant species to be distributed within the new housing scheme. Due to water shortage problems and this district being in the arid zone it is hoped to have plants ready for distribution during the upcoming north east monsoon; this will reduce the water needs of the households and enable plants to have a better chance to establish
WTSS-coastal planting Currently two selected coastal sites have been planted with two/three different varieties of plants (pandanus sp, beach almond and coconut). The idea behind this type of planting is to provide for a three tiered protection system along the coast – each species type serves as a low, second tier and final break. This type of planting is in keeping with the bio shield idea that is being promoted along the coast which will provide a natural barrier against future disasters and seasonal monsoon flooding.

Planting along the open coast was conducted by the fisheries cooperation in and around their cooperatives locations
Post Tsunami housing re-greening
A major high density housing scheme location- Modarawila- was been earmarked for intensive re greening. Due to the over compaction of ground soil by backhoes during the clearing and construction phase of this housing scheme it is now necessary for micro climate habitats to be created surrounding each tree planted in order for successful re greening to occur. The first phase of planting, plant distribution to residents and and awareness programme on proper site planting had been completed
