National Skills Standards and Competency Standards

National Vocational Qualifications are a competency based system. National Skills Standards (NSS) have been developed for occupations. MVTT continues to work towards ensuring competency standards are available in English, Sinhala and Tamil.

Only qualified ACCREDITED ASSESSORS can conduct NVQ assessments for trainees completing a vocational training course. TVEC has a database of qualified assessors available on their website. This database is searchable by assessor identification number or sector.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process under the NVQ framework which allows for a person to receive national recognition for competency achieved through previous experience. Under the RPL process, a candidate is assessed on skills acquired through informal, non-institutional learning to determine the extent to which that person has achieved the required competencies as set out in the relevant National Skills Standard leading to a qualification of the NVQ framework.

The Colombo Vocational Training Working Group was established with representation from international organizations involved in the VT sector and MVTT staff. The objectives of the working group are to share information, promote greater cooperation and collaboration in the sector, and provide strategic and national policy advice. The Working Group developed a document entitled “Effective and Sustainable Vocational Training & Skills Development in Sri Lanka“, which provides recommended principles, methodology and practices for quality, employment oriented vocational training. Click here for this document. To participate in the Colombo VT Working Group or find out who are members, send an email to Colombowusc@wusc.lk.

District Vocational Training Providers Consortia

To promote improved coordination at a district level several Vocational Training Providers Consortia (VTPC) are established in districts across the country. VTPCs support training providers to meet NVQ requirements, improve access to NVQ information at a local level, initiate improved networking between government, training providers, employers and the private sector, and improve coordination of vocational training provision at the district level, all with the goal of improving the vocational training sector at a local level. For more information please contact the VTPCs directly.
