Health ,Water Sanitation  & Nutrition for estate communities

Project for enhancing the health and nutritional condition of isolated estate communities to meet their basic needs

Aim/ goal
Improving the health, sanitary and nutritional conditions of target communities, CHA through this programe aims to propose strategies to address the key issues pertaining with health, sanitation and nutrition, of marginalized estate communities.
This project was supported by IMHO, we acknowledge their support.

Specific Objectives

  1. To cater the immediate health needs of the targeted communities
  2. To improve the health and sanitation of beneficiaries by conducting different activities and providing basic utensils
  3. Assist in providing nutritional food and nutritional pack for school children and pre-school children.
  4. Improve the line houses condition through repairing/ rehabilitating drainage system with close coordination with relevant authorities.
  5. Empowering and strengthening communities & community officers 
  6. Improve the incomes (indirectly) of communities through improving health condition
  1. Experience sharing with interested organizations through information dissemination (for policy/ approach development/ reflection) Communication materials – guidelines on inclusion of estate workers into development initiatives 

Free Medical Health Clinic at Broughton Estate
The Broughton Estate, the plantation business had been closed down and ceased for almost 30 long years and hence the community were hugely neglected .

CHA conducted its first medical health clinic in this estate on 29th March 2009. 248 beneficiaries were received the treatment. All age groups were represented, the young and old.

Free Medical Health Clinic at Balagaha Alle estate

The second clinic was held on 29th March 2009 for the estate workers at Balagaha Alle estate in Bandarawela. 550 members of the community visited altogether, while a number of 310 received treatment.

 


Distribution of hygiene item pack

All those families who received the treatment from the G.H.C. also received a hygienic kit free of charge which each pack included the following items. In total 558 members at both health clinics from each family were received a hygiene item pack, which comprised of following items,

 3.

Signal tooth brush adult

 4.

Signal Herbal 70g.

 5.

Siddhalepa 15g.

 6.

 School Health Clinic at Beddegama Maha Vidyalaya

CHA in collaboration with the Provincial Health Services unit at Haliela this clinic was conducted on 15th May 2009 at Beddegama Maha Vidyalaya. 260 inmate students were received one tooth brush, tiny pack of tooth paste, one file cover enclosed with a printed tutelage of health advice. The P.H.I. for Haliela made all the pre arrangements in regards to the conducting of the above school health clinic. The medical team comprised of four doctors and a number of trainee nurses from, N.T.S. Badulla. Rubella vaccination to all the children, examining for healthy teeth, and follow up treatment was carried out such as filling up of cavity, bad teeth extraction and general treatment. The number of school children underwent examination was 300. Trainee nurses performed a role play in educating the children participants on the health issues. An awareness lecture was delivered by Public Health Inspector at the end.
          
  
Health Clinic at the Spring Valley estate – Maymalay Division Factory Premises

CHA in collaboration with PHI office in Haliela this general health clinic was conducted on 29th May 2009 at Spring Valley Maymalay division estate & factory workers. Panel of doctors checked and diagnosed the participants. Patients were provided with anti worm tablets and vitamin tablets. A hygienic pack was offered to each of the families. HHA handed over a valuable first aid box to the estate manager, to be fixed at the premises, for the benefit of the daily work force. 

 

Infant programme at Nallamalay Division Crèches
CHA conducted an infant health programme also at two crèches which were established and meant for the estate kids of early childhood belonged to the estate workers in Nallamalay Division. The kids were made undergoing dental, eye and other medical checkups which opportunity was rare occasion for these families concerned. The families of all the kids were gifted with a nutritional pack which each included one cheese, one butter, one kg of gram, two tablets Dettol soap.  Mothers of the kids too were participated. The total number of kids concerned in the two crèches was 90.
