District Centres

These Centres serve as a focal point from where resources, knowledge and guidance relating to ecological practices will be provided. They will all have display organic gardens and extension centres and be open to the public for visitation.

Hambantota

Situated along the main highway in a property which also houses the CHA district office, this centre is in an extremely accessible and visible location. There are three components that make up the Centre:

A front area under a large mango tree with a display/sales centre. This will house plants for sale at cost, organic paddy from the Bio paddy project, recycled material cottage industry products, herbal tea shop and act as a general meeting spot for local farmers and interested visitors.
The front office of the main building which over looks the front display centre houses the Environment co-coordinators office and the awareness centre which has all relevant posters, maps and other material displayed.
The property has a large garden area at the back of the house – this is currently being converted into a display organic home garden. It will have separate plots for a bio paddy display, organic vegetable garden, herb garden, plant nursery, three types of traditional compost methods and a ‘living' fence of glyricidiea plants. Educational boards explain and accompany all

Jaffna
In process of establishment this will consist of a communal organic farm.

Kalutara

The Kalutara Centre will be divided into two: A town office with display organic garden and a field station location on the Bolgoda Lake .

Town location: Once again the Centre is situated within the same premises as the CHA district office. The garden area is being converted into a display organic vegetable garden; the idea is to have it as a live resource for education and awareness of organic cultivation options using various traditional and ecologically sustainable methods. Sign boards explaining all processes serve as an added educational component for visitors to the garden.

Relevant awareness material is also located within the office building.

Field Site: The Bolgoda site currently has the remnants of an earlier nursery project which may be restarted. The project boat will take interested parties along to visit the mangroves. It is planned to have visiting school groups for awareness sessions combined with a field visit.
